BLACK WARRIOR
In 1540, the expedition of Hernando de Soto encountered Tuskaloosa, a powerful Indigenous paramount chief in what is now Alabama. Expedition narratives portray him as exceptionally tall and physically imposing.
The name Tuskaloosa is commonly interpreted through Muskogean words associated with “black” and “warrior.”
Alternative-history interpretations ask whether descriptions of extraordinary stature connect with older traditions about giants and, more speculatively, biblical Nephilim. Those connections are theories, not established archaeological or historical conclusions.
Next we can add primary-source excerpts, archival links, maps, archaeological research, and arguments on both sides.
